Poultry Litter
While poultry production is the state's largest agricultural industry, a bi-product of poultry production, the chickens' manure, may be a valuable source of energy.
MTA-SBI is working with several groups to explore how poultry litter can effectively be used to produce energy. In addition to the possible environmental benefits, these systems may provide value to Mississippi poultry growers and help reduce their reliance on other energy sources.

Biorefinery Approach to Anaerobic Conversion of Poultry Litter for Power Generation and Other Value Added Products
Grant No.: DE-PS26-04NT42068-10
The goal of this project was to take a biorefinery approach for installing the first methane generation and capture system at a broiler chicken farm in the country. Construction of this project was funded via a $500,000 grant through the Mississippi Land, Water and Timber Resources Board, which is a state legislative body designed to promote new developments in agriculture. However, since this is the first time thata methane gas capture system was installed at a broiler operation,s ignificant education and outreach efforts were required to disseminate information about the benefits of this system. The Mississippi Development Authority – Energy Division, along with its collaborative partners from the commercial sector, state government, non-profit organizations, and academia proposed to utilize United States Department of Energy (DOE) funds for conducting outreach and educational workshops involving farmers, bankers, electrical utilities and other entities interested in renewable energy. The project duration was for one year.

Agenda and Abstracts

Anaerobic Digestion Roundtable
May 26, 2005Mississippi Farm Bureau
Jackson, Mississippi
This event focused on methods for converting animal waste from dairy, swineand poultry farms into electric and heat energy as well as additional value added products such as liquid fertilizers. Mississippi has atremendous potential to generate renewable energy from various forms of agricultural waste and anaerobic digestion is one of the ways this can be accomplished with a high degree of success. Experts in the field of anaerobic digestion and related technologies such as engine generators and fuel cells were present to educate a wide cross section of individuals from around the state.
